OK who broke into my house and took a photo of my bedroom! I mean really - of all the nerve!

OK so it's not my bedroom. It's not even close to my bedroom. I have a very contemporary bedroom. However, I have always wanted to live in an old English Castle with a bedroom that looked just like this. So technically it COULD be my bedroom if I was really rich and lived in an old English Castle. Did I mention that I really like this bedroom....

Thursday, November 29, 2012 To Gray or not to Gray?

I am soooo loving this kitchen. I am totally hooked on the black/charcoal gray color (she says as she eyes her kitchen walls). I'm still pondering whether or not to paint my kitchen walls dark gray. I have chocolate brown cabinetry with white surrounds and black granite counter tops. What do you think? Should I take the plunge and paint the walls dark gray?

Wednesday, November 28, 2012 Tove and Poul Petersen's Home

I know that I have said this many times but I love homes that just blend into the background and become one with the land. It takes a lot of time and patience to get it right and I think that Tove and Poul Petersen have done just that. Just look at how the gray-patinated flensburg stone on the façade of the house has blended with the stones on the walkway to create an almost seamless integration. The massive window in the photo above gives you a glimpse into their lives displaying different images in a way that is almost surreal. And the view from the kitchen is almost enough (dare I say it) to get me to love cooking. Everyone who knows me knows that I prefer kitchens that look like rooms instead of kitchens. Since I'm not a big cook - read not such a good cook - I prefer small kitchens that are an extension of the living area. I especially love artwork in the kitchen as this really makes the room seem like a room.

I first saw this home on Desire to Inspire and had to investigate Bates Masi Architects immediately thereafter. The beauty of the renovation combined with the natural materials used to finish the interiors was right up my alley. On the outside I just love the way this home melts into it's surroundings. The trees stand like sentinels along one side and the pool shines like a mirror to the sky. On the inside of the home the ceiling was finished with rope woven between the wooden joists. According to the info on the Bates Masi Architects site this is because the rope acts as an acoustic baffle which promotes sound from the overhead speakers while muffling the background noise (I learn something new every day!). Also, many of the interior walls, the kitchen island and bathroom were constructed using reclaimed barnwood. Beautiful and eco-friendly, my favorite kind of décor!

Never in my life have I thought about painting a wall black until now. It seems that everywhere I look designers are creating these fabulous spaces using black. It's making me want to paint something black or at least charcoal gray. We finished our kitchen renovation Christmas Eve last year and I still haven't painted the walls a color. They are just a boring white. After all the inspirational photos I've seen lately I think that I am going to paint the walls dark gray. I'll keep you posted.....

WOW right? I mean, black walls and floor with white sinks, toilet and towels combined with a BAMBOO bathtub.....I think I'm going to faint!

Tuesday, November 20, 2012 DIY: Mason Jar Holiday Centerpiece

I know how you all love Mason Jar DIY's so here's one for the Holidays! 

What you need:
A old wooden box,
Pine cones
Pine boughs
Plastic berries or dried fruit
Recycled or new Mason jars
Tea lights or votive candles

Instructions:
Fill your wooden box with the Mason Jars you've selected. Use any size jars but remember that they need to be higher than the actual box for them to look good.
Place a tea light or votive candle inside each Mason jar. If using a votive candle you will want to make sure to put the votive inside a glass votive holder prior to putting it into the jar or else you will have a heck of a time getting the melted wax out.
Surround the Mason jars with the pine boughs, plastic berries or dried fruit, and pine cones. Keep in mind that you will have to replace the pine boughs once they start to get dry.
Light the tea lights or votive candles. The warmth from the candles inside the jars will warm up the pine boughs and their heavenly scent will be released.

So there you have it, a beautiful Holiday centerpiece.

Monday, November 19, 2012 Sheepskin Softener

From warming your feet to warming your backside sheepskin rugs are showing up everywhere this year. I  live in Montreal so during the Winter it gets really cold here. Having metal chairs, such as the ones shown in the picture below, would not be an option unless I put fake (I prefer fake) sheepskin rugs on them. They would be much too cold. Adding the sheepskin rugs to the chairs not only adds warmth but also protects your back side from looking like a tic tac toe board!
